Local Effects
When heat builds up in the summer months the weather in Mallorca can change quite suddenly.
Be aware of large Cumulus clouds building quickly to form the large Cumulo Nimbus clouds of a thunderstorm. Although
fairly short lived these storms can be quite violent with very heavy rain, strong winds and sudden downdrafts.
They can cause severe problems for boats of all sizes. On land, flying debris is a real danger.
Brisk, onshore sea breezes build up from mid-morning, reaching their peak around 4 to 5pm. These can be
quite strong as they funnel into bays and add to the strength of the existing wind, especially near the mountains in the North
and West of Mallorca.
If you are anchoring or manoeuvering in the marina during these two weather effects, you may collect a "large
audience"!!!
Periods of strong winds to South East, South West and especially the North of Mallorca, can cause a large ground
swells often of over 3metres.
